Susan Catherine Boss

Good Art Every Day

Susan Boss makes non-traditional quilts in her studio in Easthampton, Massachusetts. These are not ordinary quilts but vibrant fabric compositions that capture the eye and demand close inspection. Each piece is an original work. If Susan replicates a particular design the quilt remains one of a kind because she works with an ever changing assortment of patterns and textures. The quilts are improvisational in nature. Of the hundreds or thousands of individual pieces of fabric in a particular quilt no two pieces may be exactly the same size. Susan Boss has a new series of wall pieces. They are an exploration of the relationship between typeface, crazy quilting and proverbial language. All of the work is made with artist designed, hand cut, hand printed silk-screened letters, numerals and borders. The design of the silk-screen elements are done in collaboration with Mark Brown, Susan Boss’ studio and life partner.
