The paintings in this exhibit come out of Kjaer’s concerns over a range of issues that women face today. But, as a visual artist, she doesn’t want to simply report the news. We get that from other sources. Also, Ruth Kjaer comes out of a tradition originating in the groundbreaking work of the abstract expressionist artists of the 1940s and 1950s. They realized that the application of spontaneous improvisation in the process of creating abstract art could connect us with feelings and emotions that are much harder to access through more controlled approaches to artistic creation.
“My paintings strive to create a dream-world that pulls the viewer into a world below the surface of our rational lives. In doing so, I hope that we can interrogate the world we live in today from a woman’s point-of-view.” Ruth Kjaer
