POWER MOVES IN A CIRCLE AT ECA+ GALLERY
Artist Sharon Ligorner will exhibit “Power Moves in a Circle” in the Easthampton City Arts+ Gallery from September 5 through September 30, 2012. An artist’s reception will be held on Saturday, September 8, from 5:00-8:00 p.m. as part of Art Walk Easthampton, sponsored in-part by High and Mighty Beer.
Ligorner’s rich encaustics, oils, and collages capture forms from nature and patterns of Eastern cultures. The work’s history is revealed through transparencies as remnants of colors and forms unfold showing a layered technique. Ligorner previously practiced silkscreen on glass and one can see how this technique has carried over in her new work. A bold image typically takes shape in her final piece that incorporates circles indicating references to orbs and cycles. There is a sense of harmony, light, and tranquility in Ligorner’s work that exudes a level intent that can be compared to mediation.
Ligorner says “For the last 25 years, I have been inspired by natures patterns, forms, and most frequently those that are circular. The recent work incorporates love of pattern, that feel very personal to me. Moving beyond my own restrictions, about a year ago, I began mixing the abstract imagery of nature inspired forms with the patterns that inspire and resonate with me. This blend is very personal and exciting. Color relationships that sing still play an important role.”
Ligorner has been exhibited in galleries and museums in New York, New Jersey, and the Pioneer Valley. She attended a residency at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and earned a BFA from the Massachusetts College of Art. Her work is included in the collection of the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D. C. She is an ECA+ member and holds a studio in One Cottage Street Studios. The exhibit is free and open to the public.
The ECA+ gallery is located at 43 Main Street, Easthampton, MA. Gallery Hours are Tuesday- Saturday, 12-6 p.m.
