I AM NOT THE ME YOU THINK I AM
Artist Alicia Renadette will exhibit “I am not the Me You Think I am” in the Easthampton City Arts+ Gallery from July 10 through July 31, 2012. An artist’s reception will be held on Saturday July 14th from 5:00-8:00 p.m. as part of Art Walk Easthampton, sponsored in-part by High and Mighty Beer.
Renadette’s visual language touches upon multilayered references of middle class suburban domesticity, pageantry, and visceral imagery. This language is a clue into the artist’s process and exploration of how a diverse range of influences can coexist and react to each other in the same space. Everyday objects are reused and repurposed then combined and presented ceremoniously. Decorative patterns are juxtaposed with sculptural vignettes often referencing a Rococo style but upon closer look, one will notice the used cosmetic pads and packaging materials. Renadette’s pieces seep into one another. They are turned inside out and upside down: A formal broken chair puddles with patterned material into the floor; a faux family crest, symmetrical in style, is adorned with textiles, powdered netting, pink high heels and Styrofoam corbels; and a love seat is turned inside out oozing with chair parts and sewn materials then mounted above. Beautifully grotesque, these works flow together with a quality similar to a modern day reaction to Versailles of both attraction and repulsion with a hint of humor and tragedy in it all.
Renadette’s work has exhibited in Brattleboro, San Francisco, Los Angeles and beyond. She received her undergraduate from Hartford Art School and earned an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. Renadette has held a residency at the Vermont Studio Center. She recently relocated to Easthampton where she has her studio. The exhibit is free and open to the public.
The ECA+ gallery is located at 43 Main Street, Easthampton, MA. Gallery Hours are Tuesday- Saturday, 12-6 p.m.
